Philippians 2 Discussion Questions and Topics

  • Chapter 2 of Paul' Letter to the Congregation at Philippi contains one of the most significant passages in all of Paul's many letters.
  • The 'Christ Hymn', found in verses 6-11, is widely considered to be a hymn in usage at the time that Paul wrote the letter. To say that another way, Paul did not author the hymn, but has instead quoted it, making it one of the earliest pieces of liturgy we know about.
  • The two stanzas of the Christ Hymn speak about Jesus' life/death on earth, and about his resurrection and what that means. Core Christian doctrine can be extrapolated, or taken out of, these important verses.

  • Aside from the 'Christ Hymn', chapter 2 is full of famous and widely recognized sayings of Paul. What are some of your favorites and why do they speak to you so powerfully?
  • How might we regard Paul's instructions in this chapter as ethical guidelines around which we can strive to shape our lives?
