Genesis 34-35 Discussion Topics and Questions

The Rape of Dinah and the Issues of Right Relationship
  • The story of Dinah is not one we get to hear in our normal course of lectionary readings, probably because the Lectionary Committee did not feel like we wanted to hear about rape and violence and slaughter on Sunday mornings. And the truth of it is, we probably don't. But the other side of that coin is we need to hear Dinah's story, and the tale of what Simeon and Levi did.
  • What the Bible records in terms of the relationship between Dinah and Shechem is not an example of what we like to call right relationship.
  • In all of our relationships - with family, friends, the church, God, our co-workers and classmates - God wants us to be in right relationship.
  • This is especially important in the wide and varied world of high school dating.
  • What are your thoughts about dating and what do you think a right dating relationship looks like?

hehe, me and Lauren were talking about this last night, and making a list. Some of the things she wrote down were, honesty, trust, being comfortable with each other, making an effort, not getting bored, lol. And to tie into Dinah's story, relationships shouldn't be about sex or physical pleasures. You should enjoy each other's company and have things in common. You have to be able to tell each other everything, and you have to be committed. Without this stuff (which it is not limited to) there'd be no point in a relationship.
